A thoughtful church for thoughtful people

Memorial Service for Oran Nabors

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Oran Nabors in the wee hours of Sunday, September 21. Oran was a devoted and beloved member of First Christian Church, Denton, for many years, beginning in 1960 while earning his Masters of Music Education at North Texas State University. Most notably, Oran and his wife Charlotte served First Christian, Denton, as Co-Ministers from November, 1991 until 2001, and in recent years has been a faithful congregant, participating as he could despite tremendous health challenges.
But as much as he has meant to First Christian, Denton, Oran’s influence has been much broader. He used his two degrees in Music Education serving as a band director in three schools and as Youth/Music Director in two churches from 1957 through 1967 before serving as Minister of Music and Education at Northway Christian Church, Dallas, from 1963-1973. From 1972-73 and 1976-78, Oran served on the Mission Staff, Division of Overseas Ministries, as a Professor of Worship and Liturgy at the McGilvary School of Theology, Chiangmai, Thailand. From 1973-76 and 1978-82, Oran served as Associate Minister at Memorial Drive Christian Church, Houston, and was Co-Minister at First Christian Church, Richardson, from 1982-2001. Oran earned his Doctor of Ministry from Brite Divinity School at T.C.U. in 1987.
Oran served the larger church in many ways, including chairing the area church’s Christian Education Committee; directing many camps and conferences; serving as Convenor of the Southwest Association of Christian Church Educators; Vice-President and President of the Richardson Ministerial Alliance; and President of the Richardson Interfaith Alliance. Certainly one of the most magnificent facets of Oran’s ministry was his worship through hand bells. Oran was Founder and Director of the Angelus Hand bell Choir at Fowler Christian Apartments, Dallas, for many years and was a Board Member of both the Greater Dallas Hand bell Association and the American Guild of English Hand bell Ringers, Inc.
We extend our love and deepest sympathy to Oran’s widow, the Rev. Dr. Charlotte D. Nabors; their three children, Stacey Henley, Chris Nabors, and Charles Nabors; and their families. A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, Denton, on Saturday, September 27, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
